Deadly Medicine: How Healers Became Killers

Program Description:

From 1933 to 1945, Nazi Germany carried out a campaign to “cleanse” German society of people viewed as biological threats to the nation’s “health.” Enlisting the help of physicians and medically trained geneticists, psychiatrists, and anthropologists, the Nazis developed racial health policies that started with the mass sterilization of “hereditarily diseased” persons and ended with the near annihilation of European Jewry.  The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's "Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race" exhibit traces this history from the early 20th-century international eugenics movement to the Nazi regime’s “science of race.” It also challenges viewers to reflect on the present-day interest in genetic manipulation that promotes the possibility of human perfection.  The purpose of this webinar is to provide a guided tour of this exhibit so that healthcare professionals all over the world can benefit from this important resource.



Target Audience:

This activity is intended to meet the needs of all practicing healthcare providers interested in learning from past ethical digressions in the effort to keep the patient at the center of care. 



Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this knowledge activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explore how racial hygiene theory informed public policy, public health education and government-funded research in Nazi Germany

  • Trace the evolution of eugenics from its international ideological roots to its use as justification for sterilization, segreation and eventual mass murder

  • Examine the politicization of medicine that resulted in the Nazi Biological State

  • Explore the ways in which the medical community actively participated in the labeling, persecution and murder of millions of those deemed "unfit" that took place during the Holocaust
  • Reflect on the past transgressions and apply lessons learned to modern day practice. 

 

 



Acceditation Statement:

In support of improving patient care the Center for Education Development is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.



Credit Designation:

Center for Education Development designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, 1.5 CPE credit (UAN # 0498-9999-17-002-H04-P) or 1.5 ANCC credit.

Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Participants must participate in the session and complete an activity evaluation before March 7, 2019. Pharmacists are required to pass the post-test with a minimum score of 70%.
